3 Little Apps to Remind You that Your Eyes Need Breaks Too

eyes need breaks too

Previously, I gave you tips on how to maintain body mechanics infront of your best buddy at work; the computer. You have to remember that when we sit all day infront of that glowing machine, body posture or body mechanics is not the only thing that we should be concerned of.

Remember your EYES…your OJOS or MATA in Filipino

Yes, your eyes. The Canadian Association of Optometrists suggest that you should step away from your computer screen at least 15 minutes every two hour period or 10 minutes every hour. That’s easy to say but if you are trying to finish your task to beat a deadline, it is very easy to forget about it. Hiring somebody to do just that can be impractical, or bringing an alarm clock to remind you can be an overkill (and annoying to your co-workers).

How About Trying these little babies!

These are three small downloadable applications with only one purpose in life; to remind you that it is time for your eyes to take a break.

EyeBReak

eyeBreak is a tiny app designed to sit in the Windows tray and provide a non-ignorable message reminding you to take a break from what you are working. Encoouraging you to perform eye exercises, take comfort breaks, or generally you can use the application to remind you simply to stop what you are doing.

Workrave

Workrave is a program that assists in the recovery and prevention of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI). The program frequently alerts you to take micro-pauses, rest breaks and restricts you to your daily limit. Please refer to the feature comparison for a complete list of features, and how the program performs with respect to other programs on the market. The program runs on GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows.

Eyes Relax

It’s an utility that helps avoiding eyes-related problems when working at a computer for several hours. Concentrating your eyesight on a computer screen can cause an eye strain. You can prevent this by taking regular breaks during the work and look at distant objects.

Eyes Relax is a tool that reminds you about taking those breaks. It a very flexible utility, which allows you to specify two independent (short and long) work periods, the length of the breaks, break types, notification sounds and many other settings.

Eyes Relax has also the parenting features. It can enter the password-protected Parent Mode in which the user is forced to take breaks (during the break the computer is locked). This is very useful since children often forget about the real world and play video games much too long.
